Chapter 11

Logs and Other Unusual Containers

Beautiful ceramic pots can make delightful and whimsical gardens, but why not try something a little a little out of the ordinary as a container for your fairy garden? Old suitcases, baskets, tins, and whatever else you can dream up can all be transformed into something wonderful and magical for your miniature garden.

One of the delights of creating a fairy garden is finding all sorts of unusual containers to make them out of. Gardens can be made from all sorts of things—although, depending on where you want to put your garden and how long you want it to last, there will be some restrictions.

First, you need to consider the way water will drain from your container. For plants to thrive, they cannot be too dry or too wet. If possible, make sure there are sufficient drainage holes in the base of whatever container you decide to use. If necessary you might need to drill (or ask an adult to help, if a child is creating the garden) to put half a dozen small holes in the base of your container.

Durability of your garden holder is another issue you must consider before constructing your garden. Certain materials will decay quicker than others and therefore have to be sheltered from the elements or just left to melt back into the earth. If you choose a material that will decay, be prepared to replace it over time.
